2014 Ford Fiesta ST priced from $21,400

2014 Ford Fiesta ST priced from $21,400 The 2014 model year brings a whole host of changes to Ford's Fiesta B-Segment fighter, the most important of which (to our enthusiast eyes, anyway) is the addition of a potent new ST model. The US-spec hot hatch was first shown at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show last November, and thanks to Ford's build-and-price site, we've now learned that the Fiesta ST will slide in at $21,400 when it goes on sale later this year (*not including $795 for destination).

Under the hood of the ST is a turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost inline-four good for 197 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque, mated solely to a six-speed manual transmission. Ford hasn't released performance data on its pint-sized puncher just yet, but know that these numbers make the Fiesta ST ever-so-slightly more powerful than the larger Volkswagen GTI while returning an estimated 34 miles per gallon on the highway.

Elsewhere in the lineup, the standard Fiesta also gets a smattering of improvements for the 2014 model year, including a new 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine and revised exterior styling. Pricing for the 2014 Fiesta sedan starts at $14,000, with the five-door model adding $600 to that number (again excluding the $795 destination fee). We've played around with the online configurator, and a fully loaded Fiesta ST comes in right below the $27,000 mark. Of course, this price includes niceties like partial-leather Recaro seats ($1,995), a HD audio system with MyFord Touch infotainment and navigation ($795), upgraded 17-inch dark alloy wheels ($795) and a power moonroof ($795). Molten Orange and Green Envy paint schemes will set you back an additional $595, as well.

Here's where things get tricky, though: Option out a larger Focus ST with similar levels of equipment and you're spending $29,825, all-in. Even at the base end of the spectrum, the larger Focus only represents a $2,300 price premium over the Fiesta ST, and in addition to quite a bit more space, the bigger hatch also offers a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo four with 252 horses and 270 lb-ft.

Decisions, decisions. If the Fiesta ST is anything like its bigger brother, we have no doubt it'll be a hoot on the road. In light of their prices, let us know which one you'd have by casting a vote in our poll below, then feel free to drop us a line in Comments.

Ford C-Max Hybrid falls well short in careful CleanMPG economy test, beat by Toyota Prius V

Ford C-Max Hybrid falls well short in careful CleanMPG economy test, beat by Toyota Prius V The grain of salt one should take this post with is that Wayne Gerdes is just one man, and that his personal test results may not be applicable to everyone. Still, Gerdes is well-known in the green car community – his Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid and his position as owner of CleanMPG are just two good reasons – so when he and his crew tested a Ford C-Max Hybrid, the results are worth paying attention to. Turns out, they couldn't get anywhere near the EPA's claimed efficiency numbers.

Already the subject of a class action lawsuit over fuel economy claims, the C-Max Hybrid officially gets 47 miles per gallon across all three of the EPA's test categories (city/highway/combined). Plenty of people have questioned whether 47 mpg is an accurate real-world number, and Gerdes' discovered that the C-Max Hybrid doesn't always reach the lofty EPA levels.

During a recent test in the sunny southwest, Gerdes and crew discovered the C-Max only managed 35.537 mpg over 360 highway miles but did get 52 mpg over 22.8 miles in the city. The drive was a comparison test with the Toyota Prius V, which is rated at 44 mpg city, 40 highway and 42 combined, and the V handily beat the C-Max, despite its lower EPA numbers.

Along the same route, the Prius V got 40.768 mpg on the highway and 55.8 mpg in the city. Gerdes wrote, "While the C-Max did beat its EPA city result, it fell woefully short of besting the lower fuel economy-rated Prius V revealing that the C-Max fuel economy claims beyond that of the Prius V are not what we were meant to believe." Motor Trend also found the Prius V beats the C-Max.
Gerdes is incredibly careful to take notes and pictures to document his tests (as we learned in person a few years ago), so we trust his results with the C-Max. Gerdes explained to AutoblogGreen that:
Given we are coming up on Spring training, here is a baseball analogy. With a neatly appointed interior and fastball-like performance, there is a lot to like about the all-new 2013 Ford C-Max. From a cargo carrying standpoint however, the design team took a swing and missed when compared to the Prius liftback and Prius V in particular.

In addition, it appears Ford's engineers and marketing team are in the unenviable position of simply being too far out ahead of a the curve when compared to anything in the entire Prius family lineup. The Fuel Economy curve, that is. Hopefully the Ford team will keep their eyes on the ball so that the next iteration will supply owner satisfaction from the standpoint of the C-Max's strengths while also providing a lot less pain at the pump. Right now, they appear to be getting called "out" by all the umpires well before reaching home.

When it was launched late last year, the C-Max Hybrid started with incredibly strong sales, and some drivers are certainly able to get 45+ mpg. Still, the automaker and the EPA are in discussion about potentially changing test procedures for hybrid vehicles and the lawsuits continue. You can read all of the details of the CleanMPG C-Max Hybrid MPG test here.

Fisker hires consultant, may seek bids next month

Fisker hires consultant, may seek bids next month In related news, Wanxiang in China has received approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US to buy most of the assets of A123 and has expressed interest in supporting Fisker, A123's largest customer, in any way it can. Whether that includes an investment or strategic alliance remains unclear.

Fisker Automotive has hired a consultant to oversee day-to-day operations in an effort to conserve cash, and may seek partner or acquisition bids next month, Bloomberg says.

Fisker spokesman Roger Ormisher says the California-based maker of the Karma extended-range plug-in luxury vehicle has brought on Huron Consulting Group, says the report. The company is also looking forward to a bidding process that may start next month, the wire service says, citing folks it didn't identify. The company has been short on cash largely because the US Energy Department last year froze about $300 million of the $529 million in loans earmarked for Fisker. Reports last month also surfaced that Fisker may owe the state of Delaware money if the company doesn't make good on making its Fisker Atlantic there.

Fisker hasn't produced any vehicles in more than six months because of a combination of factors ranging from negotiations with Swedish vendor Valmet to the bankruptcy of battery maker A123 Systems.

Henrik Fisker: too many pure electric car models; Karma production re-starting "soon"

Henrik Fisker: too many pure electric car models; Karma production re-starting "soon" He wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, though, as he talked about his company to the assembled ECC members and media. Fisker said that the company's first (and thus far only) model, the Karma, was specifically designed to not look like any other luxury vehicle on the market. He admits this choice both limits the appeal and makes a statement, thereby attracting a specific type of buyer. "[The style] means you're going to have a smaller market, because you appeal to people who dare to be different, who dare to show that they are buying a new type of brand, a new type of technology," he said.Whatever it looks like, Fisker believes plug-in powertrains are the right mix for today's market. A plug-in hybrid with around 50 miles of range can drive without any gas on a daily basis but still take you for long trips on the weekends, he notes. "There is not a lot of demand for pure electric cars, but I think you can see hybrids are on the rise and I think plug-in hybrids will be the next big step," he said. Since he wants

Is Fisker Automotive on the ropes? Listening to cofounder and executive chairman Henrik Fisker speak at the Economic Club of Chicago luncheon at the Chicago Auto Show this week, you certainly wouldn't think so. In an overwhelmingly optimistic speech, Fisker described his company's ethos and plan to sell green cars around the world.

Henrik Fisker: too many pure electric car models; Karma production re-starting "soon"

Fisker to be a lifestyle brand that doesn't compete with traditional automakers, there are no plans to make a gas-powered Karma (quirky aftermarket Destino venture aside). "We want to stay in a segment where there is less competition," he said, not mentioning the upcoming Cadillac ELR.Fisker also astutely managed to not mention Tesla Motors by name, even when he alluded to the company's star vehicle, the Model S. Fisker argues a plug-in hybrid beats a pure electric for many reasons, including a cheaper battery. "When you're carrying around a giant battery, it costs a lot of money on your daily commute and then when you really want to go far, you can't do it anyway. You might be able to go, let's say, 250 miles, but then when you're out of battery, you might need to recharge for a couple days or find a charging station. Whereas our way is, you have a smaller battery and, when you really want to go far, you can go as far as you want."

This limitation affects all EVs, he said. "In the pure electric car market, my prediction is we're going to have too many models for too few buyers. And the reason is that every big car company is making one little electric car, mostly to satisfy the overall fleet average," he said. "With plug-in hybrids, there's a lot fewer cars on the market, and I think a lot more buyers."Speaking of buyers, though, we're still not sure what the status of Karma sales is. Fisker doesn't announce its production numbers, but we can look at the numbers that have been publicly disclosed and calculate out from there. In late 2012, Fisker said his company had built a little more than 2,000 Karmas, and we know that it's been over seven months since any new examples rolled off the line. So, let's guesstimate that there are 2,200 Karmas in existence, and that's all that have been around for seven months. In January, a Fisker spokesman said there was a "sufficient supply" to meet demand. This week, Fisker said his company had sold 2,000 Karmas, but that number has been bandied about for months now. In any case, those steady numbers imply that most Karmas that have been built have been sold and that the "sufficient" supply suggests demand is very low. Henrik Fisker has wined and dined 25% of all Karma buyers

Henrik Fisker has wined and dined 25% of all Karma buyers Have you broken bread with the CEO of the company that made your car? Probably not. But, if you're one of the roughly 2,000 people who have purchased a Fisker Karma, then there's a decent chance that you actually have. A while back, we got to sit down with Henrik Fisker (sans food) for a lengthy interview we will be sharing later this week. But first, we wanted to highlight a few interesting things we learned, including how he sometimes takes a hands forks-on approach with his customers.

Instead of launching a big marketing campaign, Fisker told AutoblogGreen, the start-up automaker tries to think of "more innovative ways of doing marketing," including meals with buyers and potential customers:
What else can we do? Well, if you own a Mercedes, you can't go have dinner with Mr. Benz, because he isn't around any more. But you can have dinner with Henrik, maybe, at some special events we're doing. Even with our current customers, because we see them as brand ambassadors. I have had dinner or breakfast with at least 500 of them, all over the world. That's a quarter, that's quite a lot. It's great because they appreciate it and it's unique and it's something they couldn't do with any other car company and they become strong advocates for the brand and I get great feedback.Henrik Fisker has wined and dined 25% of all Karma buyers
